Ottawa Brights meet-up: Science, society and beverages
|
A bright is a person who has a naturalistic worldview - free of supernatural and mystical elements. The Ottawa meetup enjoys lively, friendly conversation and debate. We discuss science and the impact on society. We discuss atheistic issues. We discuss philosophy. The meetings are a combination of book and topic discussion. It is not critical to have read the suggested books; discussions usually take on a thread of their own. As moderator, I try to keep things on subject and hear from everyone.

"Hi :D I'm slow to adopt the "Bright" title but certaintly would qualify if i did. I'm a rather opinionated 'weak atheist', and have explored all aspects of it, some deeply and some topically but all enough to defend when needed to."
-
"Scientific background but open to any other challenging discipline. I am looking forward to mooting with you."
-
"Hi Iam a musician and reluctant contractor, I play guitar, in the past I ve played in bands doing top 40 rock and country, now I play finger style and some classical. I am dyslexic and have no higher education some colleage. Iam a free thinker, athies"
-
"I intellectually evolved into the Post-Theological Age when I was 12. That was during the sixties so like everyone else I dabbled in all of the metaphysical stuff of the times. I found absolutely nothing. Then I read Dawkins. "
-
"I have had an interest in science all my life and I have worked with scientist and professors to try to improve the teaching of science. I am concerned about the possibility of a spillover from the USA of ID and Creationist ideology. "
-
"Looking for absolute truth, a useless ambition but I can't resist. I am content to accept that natural selection may ultimately resolve the issue. I like communing with nature if that's not too spiritual. Interests, everything, esp. cogn. sc., philo."
-
"Hello!"
-
"I can't resist. I must join this group. It is an irresistible combination. "
-
"Living to learn and create. I push for critical thinking, reason and unity. Brighten someone's day today!"
-
"If I wanted a loving father, a faithful husband, an honorable neighbor, and a just citizen, I would seek him among the band of Atheists? -John Tyndall"
-
"Hi everyone, This is the last Brights email I'm going to send out. I'm merging my regular meetings into the ottawa humanist meet-up group. There are a lot of interesting things going on in the future..."
-
"Wrapping up the group for the year I've had a great time with the Ottawa Brights meet-up: Science, society and beverages. The beverages, books and that last tour were great fun. I feel lucky to have..."
-
"Glad to have you participate this evening and share a conversation following the art tour. btw, great smile!"
-
"Hi All. I suppose the best sub-250 character answer to "...why you want to meet other Brights" would be: It'd be great to know more people that are unlikely to consider, "How 'bout this weather we're havin', eh?" a good conversation starter."
-
"I'm a skeptic and atheist and love to listen and talk about everything science and not so science ;^) Here's my latest song for all you Brights. http://www.indier... "
-
"After reading Dawkins' "God delusion", I resolved to network with the silent, discriminated, atheist minority (or is it majority already?)."
-
"I look forward to meeting people who understand that just because you cant explain it or even Science can't explain it yet doesn't mean "god did it" or some other such easy answer. I am also tired of people assuming there is something wrong with me"
-
"There is only one road for all of us and then we become part of the earth and sky. It makes our few moments plucked from eternity even more precious. And I like sitting in a pub, balancing ideas with an eclectic coterie of misfits."
-
"Hi :) I am working towards non-religious freedom of conscience. Isn't it remarkable that there is no protection from religous discrimination for those who are not members of religious associations. Would like to hear other perspectives on this."
